We’ve been married almost 15 years, and our bedroom has always just been a place to sleep for us. The rest of our house is filled with bright colors, walls filled with pictures and so much personality. But our bedroom was a dud.
This is embarrassing, but I’m going to close my eyes and load this picture anyways…
We lived like this for years!! The overhanging headboard, the blinds that wouldn’t stay up, the blinds that were cheap and ugly and should never have been put up and on and on…
Then finally, I got a burst of motivation and came up with this:
Not bad. It’s starting to look a little more cohesive and bright in here. But, I’m telling you, this is NOT me! Birds and florals have never been my thing, and I’m not sure what kind of cough medicine I must have been on the night I ordered this bedding with matching curtains. From the day it arrived, it wasn’t my cup o’ tea. But instead of acknowledging that, I hung up 3 bird pictures to go with it. Smart move, eh?
So a couple months ago, I decided I was done. I was done ignoring this room. I was done pretending like I liked it. I wanted to actually pay attention to the room where I spend probably 25% of my life!
So I started looking for my inspiration piece. What was I going to build my room around?
As soon as I saw this navy and white striped comforter from Nautica, I was in love! I pulled up about 16 different tabs from BeddingStyle with my top choices to show my husband. I didn’t mention to him which one I was leaning towards (and, honestly, I would have been thrilled with pretty much any of those 16 I pulled up). I just let him go through each tab and then asked him which was his favorite. He picked the same one I did!! Yep, that’s my man!
I liked the bedding even more once it was on the bed, but then I got stumped again. Remember my first post, asking for help choosing a nightstand and window treatments?
You guys SHOWED UP!! I loved reading through all the comments and suggestions! I even went back and re-read them and took notes before I went out shopping! I didn’t get exactly what I had envisioned for each piece, but I got close enough, and might still play with them after we live with them for a little bit.
I decided to go with the black nightstands. I just love how they open up the space, and that little bit of extra height they gave was a plus for me. I ended up cleaning out my closet and dresser and selling or donating over 200 items (pack rat, much??)!! It felt good to not need the extra storage that the chest nighstands provided once I removed all the clothes I hadn’t worn in, oh… 20 years or so!
I bought these white curtain panels, because they remind me of the sails on a boat. I might still go back and add some red detailing (thin stripes or maybe random confetti), but for now I’m going to keep them plain white for a bit.
I painted this sign, because I am, after all, the queen of puns. I’ll have a tutorial on it next week, but I love the personality it adds to the space!
I can’t find a before picture of this wall, so close your eyes and I’ll paint a picture for you.
Imagine a blank wall.
Yep, that’s all it was. For 8 years, not one thing has ever hung on this wall aside from the mirror. Things might get added or replaced here and there, but we will never have a blank wall again! The “Fresh Crab Every Day” sign cracks me up, because I’m pretty sure I’m one of the crabbiest people in the morning! My husband is sooo lucky!!
It feels so good to have some spunk and color in our bedroom! Now I want to keep working on the rest of it (you know, there are 2 more walls in this room!!).
And it all started with the bedding!!
